Emotional First Aid Notes
from James Saint Cloud
with art by Aimee Stewart

Feeling like your wing's been clipped? Try this meditation inspired by Dr. Emoto's water-work.
When he came to San Francisco in 2010 Dr. Emoto presented videos of water crystals morphing as classical music was played to them — expanding like cathedrals to Swan Lake and Madame Butterfly as we watched!

One day Dr. Ishibashi, the chemist and scientist who took the photograph of the water crystals, came to see me and asked, "What if we played some music to the water?" I found the idea terrific and that's how some of the most impressive pictures came into being.

--- Dr. Masaru Emoto, The Healing Power of Water. 2008.

Before that I’d only seen his still photos of frozen water crystals, water from the same source photographed before and after being exposed to various thoughts and emotions.

Simply speaking a word or writing one on the bottle would create change. (His first book was The Hidden Messages of Water.)

So I considered, if a human is mostly water, contained in the vessel of the body, that water is being affected by each emotion presented to it, right?

Why not apply this to my meditation as an experiment?

I close my eyes to allow feelings in. Joy, love, peace, gratitude. Easy to begin with gratitude, so easy with many things to be grateful for. (Arms, feet, eyes, friends, a roof over me, if so there be.)
Toward gratitude I set intention’s course.

A gentle stream at first, the water in me makes response.

A calmness grows as inner ice begins to melt. Then a brightness, as when clouds disburse.

The sense of being small is going too, no longer so confined, as when the little wave of self rejoins the greater Self of sea.

So languid, deep, and slow. The inner eye adjusts. Who knows what's there!

Thinking is a rumble of thunder, far away, only enough to feed the gratitude. Only feelings are present now.

There are voices calmer to be heard when all is quiet; here in the quiet beneath the waves is wisdom's voice with gifts for you, from guides, angels, subconscious, call it what Source you will.

I say it is the water’s wisdom, there in us. Inner cathedrals that await you, deep.

And here's a mystery more grand: Water, Emoto claims, is in constant contact with all other water in the universe. What might it be telling me?

See what bubbles up for you. Prepare to be surprised.
